Dropping the Bomb

(I understand that given the recent happenings in Africa—Megan, you should be proud.. I watched the news—this is probs not the most politically correct title, but it got your attention didn't it?!)

Hello blog world! Sorry for my absence. STAR Events happened.
But now Region is behind us…the marathon is over. 4 of my 5 teams advanced to State and the one that isn’t advancing still got a gold ranking which pretty much means that my kids are the shit! One of my groups even got a PERFECT SCORE!!! All we have to do before state is a little bit of tweaking. I had to resist the urge to post the pictures that I have of their projects. I’m so proud of their projects that I want y’all to see them, but us FCCLA advisors are a competitive bunch and I didn’t want to reveal our secret weapon before it was unveiled. Now that it’s been seen I can share the pictures I have, but I don’t have many =(

This is our Chapter Service Project Display. My FCCLA and my 8th grade classes have been making dresses to send to the organization Little Dresses for Africa. You can find more information about them here! The doors were our secret weapon, but it doesn't really matter now anyway since this is the one that didn't advance =(

One of my groups planned a wedding for their project, so for their visuals we made a lemon cake with blackberry filling. Then we covered it in fondant and decorated it with ribbon and a flower!

This is for the wedding project too. This is one of the bouquets. Its made out of fabric, pearls, floral wire, and ribbon.

And now that the STAR Events marathon is over, I can drop the bomb…

I’m moving to Germany!!!
in November to take care of this little squirt...

Here are the most frequently asked questions when I tell people this and my answers.

Why?!
Why not?! I’m 22, unattached, and apart from my current job and my dog, have no responsibilities tying me to Athens, Madison County, or really even Bremen. Also, I have always said that all I want in life is to be a mommy.  What better way to find out if that is true?!  I get to be a mommy for my job and if I decide at the end of the year that it isn't really what I want then I'm not stuck with the responsibility for 17 more years.. SMART..

What about your job? Why on earth would you leave a perfectly good job in this economy?!
Please don’t misunderstand…I love my job! I really do! As much as I vent about FCCLA and dumb kids, all the bad stuff is canceled out ten-fold by the precious kids that are excited to see me every day. I realize that I am incredibly blessed to have gotten such a great job right out of college. That said, it was never my intention to stay in Madison County or Athens forever. It kind of freaked me out at the end of last year when I realized that, IF I were ready to be settled in one place, I could do this year after year and have an amazing amount of job satisfaction, BUT I’M NOT!! Zac Brown puts it best.. I’ve “got a gypsy soul to blame, and [I] was born for leaving”. I’ve not always been that way, but that’s a long story best saved for another time. Another contributing factor is that I am also currently working ridiculously long hours. Between cheerleading and FCCLA, I am normally at the school until like 5:30 every day. Not to mention the 30 minute commute each way. I’m away from home like 11 hours a day!! I miss my dog! And I’m just tired.. My new job is an adventure and has much better hours!

What about the Doolster?
She’s going with me!! And no, she will not have to be quarantined.

What will you be doing?
I am going to be an au pair! Think Sound of Music (minus 7 kids and the hooking up with the Captain part.. I think the wife would be pretty pissed), Nanny McPhee (minus 7 kids and magic), and Mary Poppins. I will be taking care of one little boy named Bennet. I already introduced him here but I couldn’t spill the beans yet! His dad is in the German Air Force, but has been stationed in Texas for the last 5 years doing NATO training. His mom is a speech therapist who was an au pair herself during her gap year between high school and college. I will be living with them and taking care of Bennet, who will be 13 months when I start taking care of him, for 30 hours a week (beats the heck out of my current 50 hour weeks).

Isn’t that a big pay cut?
Yes, but when you take into account that I will be living with the family (no rent or utilities), eating most meals with the family (no grocery bill) and that the family provides health insurance, has offered a car, to pay for language classes, and a gym membership if I want one, what’s left to spend money on?! Germany has pretty strict regulations on the au pair industry so the family can only pay me 260 Euros a month (a little more than $350). Obviously I will be spending money on Dooley’s food, eating out, and gas. Hopefully I will be spending some money on traveling, but I am also prepared to dip into my savings for that. That is what I was saving that money for anyway!

How long will you be gone for?
I will be moving to Texas in September 2011 and then Germany in November 2011. I will be over there for a year, so I’ll be back in November 2012.

What if you don’t like it?
Then I grin and bear it for a year… I’m prepared to be homesick—its inevitable. BUT I’m just going to have to remind myself that I’m living in EUROPE! So I guess I’ll just have to suck it and go enjoy Europe!

Why Germany?
Well, according to everyone I’ve told about it, their first reaction is usually ‘you look German!’ so we could go with the whole I’ll fit in thing, but at some point I’m going to have to open my mouth. I don’t think Germans have a southern drawl. By heritage, I am German (well Prussian), so maybe that’s why I feel drawn to Germany. Germany is very dog friendly country and Dooley wouldn’t have to be quarantined. Also, I did my study abroad in Austria, so I have confidence that I can survive in a German speaking country. During study abroad we were going through Munich pretty much every weekend and I loved it! LOVED IT!

Do you even speak German?
Not well. I took German while I was on study aboard but as Frau DiBella and Mary Claire can attest, I wasn’t too hot at it. BUT I did learn the grammar rules and some vocab. I have Rosetta Stone, and have done this intro and its going pretty good! I have confidence! My goal by Nov 2012 is to be on my way to being fluent.

What do your parents think?
They are being super supportive! Of course it is going to be hard, but, as they put it, they have raised me this way, so they have to be okay with the results! They aren’t too upset that they are going to have to come to Germany to visit!
I had to add just one more.  Isn't he presh!?!

FCCLA Week

Freakin' FCCLA... (that was for you Hannah)  This past week was FCCLA Week.  While I do not detest FCCLA like I did last year, it is still not my number one club.  At least I get paid to do it this year and boy did I earn my extra $2,000 this week!  Let me break down this week for y'all.. I'll try to keep the complaining to a minimum.  Please keep in mind that Wed-Sat, I had been at a FACS conference and literally worked on STAR Events every spare minute I had.  I'm just a little overloaded...

After our conferece wrapped up on Saturday, Mama and I went back to Bremen.  Sunday was really my only day to prep for the crazy week ahead as well as get some STAR events stuff done!    Sunday morning my lovely assistant, Daddy, and I donned our denim aprons (a gift from GATFACS...wtheck?!) and got to work making 120 cupcakes for Member Appreciation Day on Monday.  After we baked to our hearts delight, we went for a little run.  When we came back we stopped by Memommy's and D'Daddy's to go root through the barn.  I have a very distinct idea for our Chapter Service Display project for STAR Events and I needed some wood to make the display.  We found this great old door and a pair of louvered doors which we cut down to regulation size.  My dad worked hard to clean them up and he put the hinges back on them.  Look at all his hard work!  He got done just in time for the Super Bowl.  During the Super Bowl, Mama and I worked on cutting fabric for my 4th period class.  We started a new service project this week which I am super excited about!  They are making a quilt that will look like this...  It is going to be donated to a silent auction just like we did with the quilt that my kids made while I was student teaching.  I'm just a little bit hoping that Mama and Daddy might bid on it again, so I can have something to remember my kiddos by!

By the time we got done cutting out fabric, Xtina had butchered the National Anthem, the Black Eyed Peas had thrown down, the Pack had taken care of the terrible person that is Ben Rothelsberger, and it was far too late and I was far too tired to drive back to Athens.

Monday I woke up bright and early (4 AM!!) to drive back to Athens, unload Dooley, hit Starbucks, and get to work.  Monday was Member Appreciation Day, so I utilized all of my Christmas presents and loaded up my cupcake displays!  They were a hit..especially my homemade vanilla butter cream frosting!

Monday was also the day that the plague started to hit. Okay, I'm exagerating.. My throat started to hurt a little, but I blamed exhaustion and boy was I exhausted. I went home and CRASHED!

Tuesday was Hat Day for a $1 to raise money for CMN. It was a big success! We raised over $100!! I was extremely happy! Tuesday after school was the workshop for my students to do their lessons for the Focus on Children and Illustrated Talk projects for STAR Events. My girls developed a lesson to teach the kiddos about germs and the importance of washing their hands! They did SO GOOD! I was so proud of them!

After that wrapped up, I headed to Atlanta to meet up with Don for FCCLA Day at the Hawks. Neither of us had ever been to a Hawks game before, and, even though we lost terribly, it was a good time! It was great getting to catch up with him and hear all about his new big boy job!

Wednesday was "Wear Red and White Day" aka.. Ms Beltz is taking a break day.. Unfortunately this is the day that the plague took hold.  It hit me and Megan.. I was convinced it was strep.. I was dying..

Thursday was FCCLA Day at the Capitol.  We were a little uncertain if we were going to get to go or not.  It was supposed to snow that day and while the predicted temperatures made me think that it wouldn't be a big deal.. I was still a little concerned.  That morning I woke up to find that it had snowed, but all the roads were fine so we were going to Atlanta!  After some confusion about transportation (the county vehicle we were supposed to be taking was missing a seat.. A WHOLE SEAT!) and I got my coffee, we were on our way.  Our first stop of the day was the Capitol.  My kids got their picture taken on the stairs with Nathan Deal, went up to the 4th floor and did their scavenger hunts, got to sit in the Senate gallery, and then they got to go on the Senate floor and get their picture taken in the well!  Then we went over to the Coverdell Building and met with Mr. Bill.  Mr. Bill is my friend Sandy's dad who just so happens to be a Senator.  I feel that this is very convienient because well.. I couldn't even tell you who the Reps or Senators from Athens or Madison County are.  I'm still registered to vote in Bremen!  Mr. Bill did tell the kids who their Senator was and we popped over to his office while we were in the building!

After we got done at the Capitol we headed over to Hard Rock where I had my favorite meal ever and we all got changed into our comfies!  After that we were off to the World of Coke!  So much fun!  I'm so glad I got to experience the new one with my middle schoolers!  I really got to appreicate it from the kids level!  They thoroughly appreicated the history of coke as well as the 4D movie and the tasting lab!  I had such a good group of girls!  They helped me forget how sick I really was, but it all hit me again on our way back to the school.

When we got back I went and wrote up sub plans for the next day and called Mrs. Faye.  I would not be there on Friday because a) I was pretty sure I was running a fever, b) My throat was going to need to be removed, and c)I was sick and tired.. So Friday, instead of having a Spaghetti Dinner, I drove back through Atlanta for the 4th time in 5 days and went to the doctor.  The good news?  No strep.  The bad news... Its a sinus infection.. but now I have antibiotics and 2 days to rest and recoup!  Our FCCLA Dinner and a Movie Night was rescheduled for Monday so hopefully I will be over the crud in time to make a lovely Valentine's Day meal for myself and 30 of my favorite 11-14 year olds.. (What happened to my New Year goals?!)

Today has been lovely.  I slept in and then I have sat on the couch all day and watched movies.. I think the TV powers that be knew I was sick and wanted to watch movies so they put only the good romantic comedies on.. Not the ones that make single people to jump off buildings, but the ones that actually make fun of themselves a little bit.. I appreciate that since I didn't really have the energy to make fun of them for them.  The best part of today?  I haven't done a lick of work or anything FCCLA related.  Its been amazing!  Sadly I know that I have to write a speech tomorrow, but I'll take it.. I just needed a day off.. Now off to Memommy and D'daddy's for Saturday Night Dinner!

Ich bin zurück, ja wieder zurück

So I haven’t updated the blog in over a year because frankly I don’t really think that anybody actually reads it. However, due to my recent obsession with other people's blogs… I think that it is high time that I start posting again. No, I don’t have anything exciting like European adventures to write about this time, but I do have daily ramblings, random thoughts, and the ridiculous things that middle schoolers to tell all of my non-existent readers about. Let’s start with a life update…

I graduated last December from UGA. I started teaching Family and Consumer Science (a.k.a. Home Ec) at a middle school near Athens in January. I was also told that I would be the FCCLA sponsor and that they would like for me to take kids to competition. (Quick fact.. Region competition is in February). We threw together two projects and off we went to competition. One of the projects was a speech about the need for special training in order for kids to babysit children with autism. For the other project, we planned a wedding.

Little did I know how good of a job we did on those projects. Both projects advanced to state competition. Now, I'm not going to lie.. I found this very stressful. Now that meant that I had to take 4 kids to Athens for 3 days, get a hotel, stay overnight in a hotel, as well as work on these projects for another month. I was very happy that my kids were experiencing success but I, as a brand new adviser who was faking it til I made it, was stressed. Just stressed.

March and state competition rolls around and my kids compete. At some point during this weekend my kids learn that if you win state you advance to national competition.. WHAT?! There is a national level?! I certainly didn't know about that, but I wasn't too worried. I told myself there was no way that a project that had been thrown together in 2 weeks would win state. These FCCLA people are pretty serious about their STAR Events and I was the new kid on the block. Well.. we won! Chicago here we come...

I ended up taking one of my middle schoolers and two of the high school girls to Chicago for a week this summer. While I found being 22 and responsible 24/7 for two 16 year olds and a 12 year old in a city the size of Chicago just a little bit intimidating, stressful, terrifying, etc., the girls and I both had a fabulous time. We got to do lots of sightseeing, eating, competing, and WINNING! My little middle schooler ended up winning nationals!! Here are some pictures from our adventure!

We have arrived!...and we had a very stylish ride to pick us up from the airport!

Dinner at Rainforest Cafe with my arch-nemesis. This is us making a mends but just a bit before I had turned around from giving our name and this thing was looking at me and it darted its tongue. I literally fell back and screamed. Needless to say, the kids though this was hilarious.

Bike tours! My favorite way to see a city!

Competition time! This is the cake I made to be a mini replica of the cake we chose for the project. We also had fresh flowers for the bouquet and I made a wedding dress to go on my American Girl doll to show the dress we chose. What can I say? We are winners.

Sears Tower Sky Deck... 133 stories up!!

Me with the girls at the Taste of Chicago in Bryant Park. Please notice the American Girl bag.. That belongs to the high schoolers. They bought a doll.

More about the new living situation and our family vacay to Veiques later. Stay tuned all you imaginary readers out there!
